Video Conference on Teacher & Teaching Assistant
Certification Requirements

Ensuring that you maintain valid certification is your responsibility!

Do you know that if you let your certification lapse you could lose your job?

The path to obtaining teacher certification in New York State has become quite complicated as teacher preparation reflects the rigor necessary to implement higher educational standards.

Where are you on the path?

Are you pursuing initial, professional certification or teaching assistant certification?

What do you need if you are pursuing initial or professional certification?

What do you need if you are pursuing teaching assistant certification?

Do you know what examinations you have to take…f any?

Do you know how much time you have to complete these requirements?

Do you understand the Professional Development requirement?

Are you confused?

Through presentation and question-and-answer, this videoconference details the NYS certification process and provides participants with information and resources as well as recommendations on how to work towards maintaining certification.

This videoconference is conducted by NYSUT Research and Educational Services
and NYSUT’s New Member Program
in cooperation with your NYSUT Regional Office
and your local union as a service to our members.

Dear Colleagues,

Again this year NYSUT will be offering interactive video conferences for teachers pursuing permanent certificates and focuses on certification issues after February 1, 2004 on October 27th and January 18, 2011.  (If any teacher whose certificate pre-dates February 1, 2004 needs advice, please have them contact me.)  This session will provide an overview of classroom teaching certification requirements, the application process and the professional development requirement.  This session can be helpful for already certified teachers who may be applying for an additional certificate or grade-level extension.  *This workshop is not for Pupil Personnel Service Providers or Administrative certificate titles.

NYSUT is also offering video conferences for Teaching Assistants on December 8th and March 23, 2011. This session will provide an overview of the certification requirements, the application process and the professional development requirement for teaching assistants.

Each of these workshops will be approximately 50 minutes long with opportunities for questions and answers.

Attached to this e-mail is the flyer that further explains these conferences and a registration form.

Call the PDTA office is you have any questions. Remember, having the proper certification is your responsibility.
